Lufthansa First Class Review Airbus 340 - Frankfurt to Seoul (FRA-ICN)
What a special flight!! Flying with Lufthansa in First Class is always a thrilling treat - extravagant, indulgent, and regal! The service is always personable, the cuisine is spectacular, and the seat is luxurious.
Here’s a review of my recent adventure on their slick Airbus A340: (I have a separate post on my time before the flight in Lufthansa’s First Class Terminal in Frankfurt).
Stylish and sophisticated are two words I would use to describe the First-Class A340 cabin on Lufthansa. It feels like private club and it’s definitely exclusive: two rows and eight seats. On my flight there were only six passengers – served by three flight attendants!
The use of beiges, chocolates and whites gives the whole space a calming aura. I immediately relaxed the second I plunked down in my seat.
The flight attendants had set up an elegant bar at the front of the cabin – which showcased chilled champagne, wines, and infused water. I instantly went for the champers – but passengers could order whatever they wanted on the ground. Our flight was actually delayed an hour due to high winds – but with the fab bar service that didn’t bother me!
Travelling 11 hours to Seoul was pure bliss in Lufthansa’s First Class seat. I loved that it was open and airy during the day – and cacooning at night. I was fortunate to have one of the coveted window seats. It was a ‘solo’ spot with no-one beside me – and it had an expansive view out three windows.
Space wasn’t a problem either. I’m 5’10 and there was no way I could touch the seat in front of me.
The seat was a mixture of leather and rich fabrics and had a lot of built-in, luxurious features.
The amount of storage was off the charts. Besides having an entire overhead bin for my carry on, there was extra capacity in the seat’s ottoman, side cabinets and cubby holes. So much space that I had to be careful where I put everything. I was worried about forgetting something.
The seat has specialized lights for use at night – to ensure you dodn'tbother your fellow passengers. These are built into the seat and the dividers.
When this seat is in bed mode its huge – feeling almost as big as a twin bed in a hotel! I had no problem sleeping for a solid stretch on this flight!
As soon as it was time to slumber- the flight attendant on duty magically transformed my seat into the bed – equipped with a lush mattress pad, a posh duvet, and two magnificent pillows! To top off the experience – she raised a privacy screen which blocked out most of the cabin.
Exceptional wines, stellar spirits, and fine food is what premium traveling is all about – and Lufthansa delivers on all three from start to finish!
I began with the vintage champagne, moved to the extravagant John Walker Blue, transitioned to the Patz & Hall Sonoma County Chardonnay, and finished off my gourmet meal with a sumptuous German dessert wine! The beverages were truly remarkable – all of them! Pairing them with a stellar view of the Russian country side below only made the whole experience more glamourous.
On the food front – the meal started with a bang! An amuse bouche of shrimp and mango. What a tasty popper.
This was followed by one of the most opulent dishes in the air – Caviar! I always love the way that Lufthansa serves it – accompanied with chopped egg whites, chopped yolks, sour cream, onions and lemon. All of it enhanced with chilled champagne (and vodka if you want it!).
The next delicacy was the appetizer course. There were five dishes to select from - and I went for the Korean Rice Rolls (I was headed to Seoul after all!), the Tart of Halibut with Fennel Salad, and Vinegarded Apricots with Gorgonzola. All of them unique and scrumptious.
There was a bit of a break before the main course – where Lufthansa presented what I thought was the rock star dish of the night: Yuzu Sorbet flavored with Gin! Wow! … it looked as good as it tasted. I had no idea what Yuzu was, but I wanted more – especially with its crisp gin accompaniment! (Yuzu is a citrus fruit that looks a bit like grapefruit).
Oh my God – could I eat any more? I was definitely starting to slow down at that point!
For the main – I went for the Sole in Makrut Lime Stock with Grilled Zucchini and Corn Falafels. The dish looked a bit bland – but it was super tasty.
At this point I felt like I was actually at a feast in bacchanalian Rome!
I had to sample the cheese though as it looked magnificent! I’m not 100% sure of what she plated, but I think it was the Honey Goat & Walnut Dream Cheese (and something else). Both were accompanied with a Date and Sesame Chutney!
...you’ll notice that there are no photos of dessert. I couldn’t make it that far! I did see a number of treasures on the menu though - including Fresh Strawberries, Lime Chantilly, Woodruff Panna Cotta (with Raspberry Pepper Compote), and ice cream.
About seven hours later - it was time for breakfast. I was still pretty stuffed from the feast the night before – but I sampled a little bit of everything as it all looked so inviting.
Coffee options included cappuccino. On this flight, it came out with a tower of schiuma. I was so impressed as I know from my days as a barista in college how hard it is to whip up that much milk. Maybe it’s easier at 34,000 feet above Mongolia!
After the java presentation – came a trolley of morning delights. If it’s served for breakfast in some part of the world -it was on this cart! I went for the Graved Salmon, Gouda and Brie Cheese – along with a beautiful dish of berries and fruit. I followed this up with scrambled eggs and chive – that were made fresh in the galley.
I don’t talk about the restrooms too much in my flight reviews, but the ones on Lufthansa’s A340 are noteworthy. Despite their size, they didn’t feel like an airplane lavatory at all. They actually felt like high-end change rooms – with a leather bench that basically hid the commode.
The lav was also fully stocked with toiletries including: Evian misters, mouthwash, shaving cream, toothpaste, toothbrushes, and La Prairie lotions. More like the bathroom at the Four Seasons than on a plane!
Speaking of toiletries – the amenity kit that Lufthansa distributes in first class rocks! The smart Windsor case housed an extensive inventory of items that were useful in flight. The contents included : socks, eye shades, ear plugs, toothpaste, and a comb.
What pushed the case over the top for me was the La Prairie samples. I felt like I had gone to the spa after using the face, hand and lip creams in the kit! I am definitely a fan of that line
My 11 hour flight on the A340 blew by in no time at all. I actually wished I was in the sky a bit more to enjoy the stellar service, amazing cuisine, and comfort that Lufthansa First Class had to offer. I can’t wait for my next chance to experience so much luxury at 35,000 feet!
