NCL Dawn – Bar Reviews – Cocktails at Sea!
Hip – Fresh – Slick: Three words to describe the multitude of lounges on the newly (2016) renovated Dawn.
A dazzling array of cocktails and concoctions flow from over 10 diverse venues practically 24 hours a day! The Dawn showcases everything from $300 bottles of California wines to $7 Irish drafts …all in magnificent venues!
I recently sailed on the Dawn – and here’s a review of my favorite spots.
The Cellars– by Michael Mondovi
Cellars was a hit with me! My number one spot.
NCL only has a few ships with wine bars – and the Dawn is one of them. Each night, Cellars hosted a regular crowd of oenophiles and people who just like to grab a glass of wine before dinner.
Cellars featured a spectacular wine list to put it mildly: bottles in all price ranges - right up to Opus One and Dom Perignon (bring your bonus check if you want either of those).
The sommelier in charge definitely knew his wines and was eager to make suggestions. The venue had the feel of a private club: plush seating, champagne buckets, and a monolithic marble bar.
Gatsby’s is the official champagne bar on the ship - -but it looked a bit more like a scotch heavy crowd to me (the vicinity to the cigar lounge may have caused that).
However - Gatsby’s had EVERY imaginable libation on earth (the shot at the start of the post is Gatsby’s bottle collection). It would have taken me two around-the-world cruises and three livers to sample all the wares they had on hand!
Bliss is the ship’s nightclub and has a chic, glossy ambiance.
Unfortunately, it is plagued by the same problem of the Bliss on the NCL Gem: it hosts the dreaded karaoke each night at about 10PM!
The off key crooning did not last forever though...Later in the evening, I would return when the Bliss lit up, transforming into the ship's disco and late night party spot.
This was the best spot for views!
Bimini is an outdoor, nautical themed bar at the top of the ship that offered stunning vistas. Marvelous views and scenery!
The Java Café is the ships official coffee bar – but in reality it’s the lobby bar. It’s situated in the ships soaring five story atrium - and was buzzing morning, noon and night!
It was a great hangout to people watch. I also am a fan of glass elevators – so it was fun watching those glide by!
O’Sheenhan’s was the Dawn’s Pub – and it was packed solid each night.
My sailing departed from Boston – and the locals definitely liked this venue for their beer. I went here mainly for lunch to avoid the crowds. They served great pub food – and of course – ice cold drafts.
I loved the allure of the bars on this ship. They were up-to date and polished.
If you are a lounge lizard – you are sure to find a fab hang out in on the Dawn!
